Letter to editor: Sexual Assault Awareness Month
Dear Editor, April is recognized nationally as Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), a time dedicated to raising awareness about sexual violence, supporting survivors and strengthening our commitment to prevention. Sexual violence impacts individuals, families, and communities across the country—including right here in our local communities. Although the statistics can be difficult to hear, they remind……

Former Galva resident gets behind the scenes glimpse at Super Bowl
Letter to Editor Dear Editor, There are moments in life when you stop, look around, and quietly ask yourself, How is this real? Super Bowl Media Week in San Francisco was one of those moments for me. I’m from Galva. A small town where Friday nights mean high school sports, where everyone knows everyone, and……

Reader asks if F-word usage is really necessary
Dear Editor, How did it happen? Back in the day—w-a-a-a-y back—it was just a respectable Anglo-Saxon word for the very enjoyable act that brought every single one of us into this world. And now it’s the insult of choice? The President, athletes, newscasters, comedians, political candidates in Illinois—you name ‘em, they’re blatting it out, rolling……

Reader reminds us we are not alone
Dear Editor, Friday morning, I stopped at the Barnhouse Restaurant hungry to see other humans. I ran into two friends I adore. We talked about nothing important. Coffee refills. Small plans. Familiar jokes. I left lighter than I arrived. Not because anything was solved, but because connection did its quiet work. Walking out, I kept……

Reader writes about unusual remains buried along fire debris
Rollie Krauses’s story of the 1942 fire that destroyed much of downtown Kewanee was interesting and accurate. It is a major event in the history of Kewanee. MORE: Witness to Great Kewanee Fire shares his memories The debris from the fire was deposited in an old coal mineshaft just west of Neponset. For what it’s……

‘Always a Kewanee connection’
Letter to editor Dear Editor, My dad sent me your recent article about the premiere of Fairyland in Kewanee. I live in NYC and was able to attend one of the screenings on October 4th, where Alysia Abbott was there for a Q&A after the film. Though I’m not a Kewanee native myself, my family……

Reader disagrees with weekly faith column
Dear Editor, I enjoy reading The Kewanee Voice and support it. The religion post from today (Friday) is offensive to me. Regrettably, Charlie Kirk was murdered by a misguided person. MORE: Up in not down, good is not evil Violence in our country can never be condoned. Nevertheless, I believe that Charlie Kirk was a……

The Kirk effect
Letter to the Editor With the recent brutal assassination of the evangelical political activist Charlie Kirk, many have wondered what his legacy will be. Besides leaving behind a young widow and two small children, aged 3 and 1, what type of impact will Charlie have on the broader culture? Let me answer that question with……

Reader requests people read the ‘Declaration of Independence’
Opinion Dear Editor, Have we come a full cycle? Two hundred forty-nine years ago, 56 brave men signed a declaration that started this nation on its road to independence. A lot has happened to our country since that occurred. When was the last time you read the whole “Declaration of Independence,” if ever? You might……

The danger of hoarding grace in a fear-driven America
Opinion Dear Editor, Last month, I came across a troubling video: a woman shouting the n-word at a toddler in a public park. The footage alone was appalling, but what lingered, and has stayed with me since, was the wave of online defenders who excused, even celebrated, her behavior as some kind of righteous stand.……

Reader believes Ms. Tate should be allowed to keep her home
Dear Editor, I read with interest the article regarding Ms. Bodanna Tate and her fight to keep her home at South Winds Trailer Park. Ms. Tate maintains a lovely, clean home, inside and out. She is paying her bills. She is obviously a responsible citizen and deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. MORE:……

Letter writer clarifies “Cool Your Jets”
Dear Editor, I think I need to clarify my view as expressed in my recent letter, “Cool Your Jets.” I’ve heard from several people who agreed or disagreed with me, and I’m glad to say all presented their views sensibly and civilly–in other words, with cooled jets. In no way do I discourage sensible, civil……

Protest, debate and discourse, the messy work of democracy
To the Editor, Carol Gerrond’s recent letter was a nostalgic ride, from jet engines to Jimmy Kimmel, and while I appreciate a good idiom revival as much as the next person, “Cool your jets!” might not be the rallying cry we need right now. Yes, emotions are high. Yes, public discourse can get heated. But……

Cool your jets!
To the Editor, Back in the dark ages when I was a schoolgirl, the jet airplane was a relatively new addition to our fighting force. Jets were fast and powerful, but upon landing, their engines needed a cool-down period. “Cool your jets!”–in no time at all, when emotions got overheated and threatened a blow-up, this……
