Letter to editor: Sexual Assault Awareness Month

By The Kewanee Voice    April 1, 2026

Dear Editor,

April is recognized nationally as Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), a time dedicated to raising awareness about sexual violence, supporting survivors and strengthening our commitment to prevention.

Sexual violence impacts individuals, families, and communities across the country—including right here in our local communities. Although the statistics can be difficult to hear, they remind us why awareness, education and community involvement are so important. Many survivors never report their experiences due to fear, shame or concern that they will not be believed. As a community, we have the power to change that.

One simple but powerful way we can support survivors is by choosing to believe them. Campaigns such as “Start by Believing” remind us that our first response to someone sharing their story can make a profound difference in their healing journey. Listening without judgment, offering support, and connecting survivors to resources are critical steps toward recovery.

SAAM is also an opportunity to focus on prevention. Prevention starts with education, healthy relationship discussions, and creating environments where respect, consent, and accountability are the norm. Schools, families, community organizations and businesses all play an important role in these efforts.

Throughout April, community members are encouraged to participate in awareness events, share educational resources and show support for survivors. Whether it is learning more about prevention or simply having conversations that challenge harmful myths about sexual violence, every action helps build a safer community.

Ending sexual violence requires collective commitment. Together, we can create communities where survivors are supported, voices are heard, and prevention is a shared responsibility.

Sincerely,

Melanie Whitmer
