After finishing an undefeated regular season Friday night, the Annawan-Wethersfield Titans football team now is hoping for a long run down the tournament trail.

The Titans went on the road Friday to defeat South Fulton 50-7. That earned them a no. 2 seed for the playoffs.

Annawan-Wethersfield will open the playoffs at 1 p.m. Saturday against 15-seeded Stark County at Wethersfield Memorial Stadium. The Titans defeated the Rebels 48-7 during the regular season.

The road to the state finals won’t be an easy one for Annawan-Wethersfield. Perennial football powerhouses Stockton and Lena-Winslow are among the teams in the same bracket as the Titans.

In Friday’s game, Maddux Heitzler opened the scoring at the 5:45 mark of the first quarter with a 39-yard touchdown run. Less than three minutes ran off the clock before Devon Horrie scored from 37 yards out to make it 14-0 after one quarter.

Four second-quarter scores sealed the deal for the Titans. Annawan-Wethersfield scored touchdowns on runs of 23 and three yards by Nic Thurston, 49 yards by Heitzler and 37 yards by Horrie to make the halftime score 42-0 Titans.

The home team finally got on the scoreboard in the third quarter, but Annawan-Wethersfield rounded out the scoring with a seven-yard touchdown run by Aaden VerStraete.

Thurston ended the evening with 129 yards on five carries. Heitzler ran the ball five times for 123 yards and Horrie amassed 85 yards on his three carries.

Annawan-Wethersfield threw just two passes on the evening. Both were incomplete.
