A big second half on offense led the Annawan-Wethersfield Titans to a 29-20 road win Friday over Rushville-Industry.
In a penalty-filled game, senior quarterback Dillon Horrie and junior running back Zeb Rashid keyed an offensive attack that was too much for the Rockets’ defense.
A-W went from a 14-14 halftime tie to a 29-14 lead that held up until the hosts scored a late touchdown.
Rushville-Industry opened the game looking like they would dominate the Titans. The Rockets controlled the ball for more than 11 minutes in the first quarter, scoring on a 10-yard run by sophomore Rylan Reimolds and a two-point conversion.
That was the only lead of the night for Rushville-Industry, and it didn’t last long. Ryker Gillespie of A-W recovered the onside kickoff, and two runs by Rashid — the second a 44-yarder for a touchdown — put the Titans on the board, although the PAT attempt failed.
Early in the second quarter Annawan-Wethersfield recovered an R-I fumble and a few plays later Horrie ran 25 yards for a TD. Rashid’s PAT run made it 14-8 Titans.
The hosts tied the score later in the quarter when Travis Gray ran it in from the 10 and the PAT failed.
Late in the third quarter Horrie ran for another touchdown and his PAT pass to Colin Hornback made it 22-14.
The Titans tacked on what proved to be the winning score on a touchdown pass from Horrie, making it 29-14.
Rushville-Industry scored with 1:46 to go to make it 29-20, and the Titans ran out the clock to clinch the win.
Annawan-Wethersfield is now 2-1 on the season and will host Monmouth United next week in Annawan. Rushville-Industry is winless in their first three games.
