Library releases January schedule

By The Kewanee Voice    January 8, 2024

Tech Hours with Doug

Whether you have an issue with your laptop, phone, or tablet, Doug is here to help.  Stop in on Jan. 11 between 3:30 and 5 p.m. with your device and Doug will help you troubleshoot or demonstrate how you might get it to do what you want.

Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. at the Library AmeriCorps volunteers have once again sponsored a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebration at the library.  Children of all ages are invited to join us Monday, Jan. 15, from 10:30 a.m. to noon for activities, books, games and refreshments. This event does have several come and go activities, so don’t worry if you can’t make it for the entire program. Please join us as we learn about MLK’s values of courage, truth, and justice.

Adult Book Club – Monday, Jan. 15 at 2 pm and 6 pm

The next meeting of our Adult Book Club is Jan. 15. We will discuss The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes. Meetings will be held at 2 and 6 p.m. Those attending the evening meeting should enter through the elevator entrance on First Sstreet.  In February, we will be trying something a little different. Instead of meeting Feb. 19, we will be hosting a Book Tasting with Kit at 10 a.m. on Feb. 21.

Preparing for the Future: Funeral Pre-Planning and End-of-life Legal Needs

As Benjamin Franklin said, in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes. If you’re worried about what your death may mean for your friends and family, preparation is key. Stop in Wednesday, Jan. 31, at 1:30 p.m.  William Burford and Dan Rux of Rux Funeral Home and Justin Hunter of Prairie State Legal Services will answer the questions that no one wants to ask to prepare for one of life’s only certainties.

Young Adult Programming

Since January tends to be a hectic month for us, filled with uncertain weather, we decided to err on the side of caution and do not have an in-house craft planned, but stop in throughout the month for our wood disc snowman face ornament grab ‘n go craft. The kit includes all of the supplies to paint a snowman face or to use enclosed props to create your own unique snowman.  Kits will be available while supplies last.

Creativity at the Carnegie

Do you enjoy knitting, crochet, embroidery, cross stitch or quilting? Come and join us in the second-floor Community Room on the second Tuesday of each month from 4-6 p.m.  This is an adult group sponsored by the Friends of the Kewanee Public Library for those who would like to enjoy the comeraderie of others while creating their own fiber projects. The next meeting will be Jan. 9.  For more information call (309) 852-4505.

Youth Programming

Our winter session of Baby to Pre-K Storytime returns right after the holidays. Babies to Pre-K-aged children can join the library’s youth staff for songs, action rhymes, stories and games on Tuesdays at 11:30 a.m. starting Jan. 9 through Feb. 27. Reading to children helps develop their brain, enhances their ability to focus, and improves social and communication skills. After story time, children may play with the library’s sensory building toys. We will once again be hosting two in-house crafts geared toward our different age groups. The young crowd and their caregivers are invited to come in Jan. 17, 18 and 19 from 2-6 p,m, or Jan. 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. We’ll be making DIY pipe cleaner snowflakes.

For our slightly older crowd, we will be making DIY Connect Four games on Jan. 10, 11 and 12 from 2-6 p/m and on the Jan. 13 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The newest Grab and Go Craft is Magic Salt and Watercolor Snow Art kits. They’re available now.
