By The Kewanee Voice    September 1, 2023

After a slow start, Kewanee High School’s soccer team rallied for a 7-3 win at Abingdon against Abingdon-Avon.

Cristian Cazares scored four goals to pull within eight of the school’s career record of 88 goals.

KHS Coach Jose Bermudez said that for the first 10 minutes his team “looked like they couldn’t do much.” But after the host team scored first, Kewanee scored the next four goals.

Bermudez said of Cazeras, “We are not saying that he is the only great player.” He also cited:

— James Roginski, who “leads the team and fights for the ball and recovers it, making the whole team better;”

—Jack Coombes, “how strong he plays and leads the whole defense;”

— Tyson Currie, “how much he runs to attack and defend;”

— Tony Moran and goalie Dillon Price.

“Every single player adds something good,” Bermudez said.

Individual stats were:

Goals: Cazares four, and Roginski, Isidro Martinez and Jack Coombes, one apiece.

Assists: Roginski 3, Martinez 2, Michael Bermudez and Cazares, one each.

Saves: Price, 7.
