
The Boilermakers varsity squad suffered a 60-21 setback at the hands of the Princeton Tigers in Princeton Tuesday.
The Boilers trailed 19-8 after one quarter, and 36-12 at the half. They scored 9 third-quarter points and were scoreless in the fourth quarter.
Colson Welgat led Kewanee with seven points, and Catrelle Reed had six.
Loyal Peed, Greyden Lewis, Abram Hicks and Dontaveon Thomas each had 2 for Kewanee, whose record now is 9-8 overall and 1-2 in conference.
Kewanee’s freshman basketball team played their first game against in 18 days against Princeton Tuesday night, falling short 50-46.
“The team started out hot early on with their heavy pressure and forcing a lot of turnovers,” said Coach Trenton Terry. Kewanee led 16-4 in the first quarter.
After some adjustments made by Princeton, the pressure turned on the Boilers where they struggled getting baskets offensively. The team still maintained a 23-19 lead at the half.
The second half saw the teams trading buckets and forcing a lot of turnovers.
“It was definitely one of the most high-intensity games battled out this season,” Terry said.
After a couple more fourth quarter mistakes, Princeton went on a stretch of unanswered buckets, leading to the win.
Leading scorers for the Boilers were Jaxon Derue with 15 and Noah Barreto with 9.
Central Junior High’s seventh-graders won two games this week.
They topped Bureau Valley 28-14, with Anton Jones scoring 15 and Javeon Johnson and Cruse Cernovich scoring 5 apiece.
Kewanee then topped Rockridge 31-9. Jones again led the way, with 10 points; Ryan Pratt added 9.
The team is 16-3 on the season.
