IRMA launches Illinois Retail Leaders Apprenticeship Program

By The Kewanee Voice    February 27, 2026

The Illinois Retail Merchants Association has launched a new statewide apprenticeship program aimed at training future retail leaders through a mix of online coursework and paid, on‑the‑job experience.

The Illinois Retail Leaders Apprenticeship Program is the first retail‑specific apprenticeship of its kind in the state. Participants complete 150 hours of online instruction and 2,000 hours of paid training with an Illinois retailer. The program is funded through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

Apprentices are already working with participating retailers, and a new cohort begins training at the College of Lake County in March. Employers can enroll current or future workers and may qualify for up to $5,000 in tax credits per apprentice.

“Retail is one of the most dynamic industries in Illinois,” IRMA President and CEO Rob Karr said. “This program will help build long‑term and meaningful retail careers while supporting Illinois businesses with a highly trained workforce.”

DCEO Director Kristin Richards said the program will help strengthen the state’s workforce and support economic development.

Participants who complete the program earn a U.S. Department of Labor Retail Operations Specialist Certificate. Coursework covers customer service, conflict resolution, loss prevention, merchandising, inventory management, finance and logistics.

The program is open to current retail employees, those pursuing retail management careers or individuals entering the industry.
