Boiler Girls secure conference title with win over Hall

Kewanee High School’s girls’ softball team ended their regular season with a shutout win over Hall in a home game Tuesday.

The Boiler Girls’ 10-0 win gave Kewanee an 18-14 record for the season. Kewanee was the Three Rivers Athletic Conference East Conference winner for the second year in a row with a 9-1 record in the conference.

Kalleigh Gale drove in two runs Tuesday while Lily Lee, Kieryn Abernathy, Audrey Clucas, Lyric Duytschaver and Remy Hicks all drove in a run.

Gale was the winning pitcher for Kewanee.

Kewanee jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and added two more in the second. They put the game away with a four-run fifth inning.

Key wins for the Boiler Girls during the season included defeats of Interstate 8 Conference champs LaSalle-Peru (who were ranked third in Class 3A) and Pontiac (the Illini Conference champs who were ranked ninth in Class 3A).

For the season, Gale led the Boiler Girls with a .516 batting average. Other batting leaders were Abernathy (.450), Rylee Blades (.438), Hicks (.337) and Clucas (.306).

Blades led the team with seven homers. Abernathy had three, and Gale, Macee Pickering and Addy Yepsen each had a round-tripper.

Gale was the RBI leader with 26, followed by Abernathy (25), Blades (22), Pickering (15) and Duytschaver (15).

Gale pitched more than 90 innings during the season and recorded the 400th strikeout of her career.
