***Addison Looney is a participant of The Kewanee Voice Student Journalism Program, funded by the Harry Anderson Memorial Trust.

This fall, Wethersfield’s National Honor Society chapter members are tasked with completing an individual service project.

“NHS students have always been involved in service activities, but I believe it is the first year that they have been asked to host individual service projects,” said the new chapter advisor, Tricia Lay.

This new idea gives members the ability to express themselves through community service and leadership. It allows students to adhere to their strengths and create their own ways of fundraising.

All money raised by these projects will be donated to the Kewanee Food Pantry. Each member’s goal is to raise a minimum of $100 and then find a business or individual sponsor who will match the amount. The goal is to donate all the money by Dec. 15 in hopes of helping families in need for the holidays.

Faculty adviser Tricia Lay, seated, helps National Honor Society members Natalie Nelson and Camryn Anderson plan their bake sale project.

Currently, several projects are already under way. There is a basketball skills camp on Nov. 2 in the Wethersfield Junior High gym for Wethersfield students in first through sixth grades. This project is hosted by high school students Katelyn Carman, Lana Scott, Collin Hodge and Jonathan Torres.

At the first Titans football playoff game, members Camryn Anderson and Natalie Nelson are having a bake sale offering a variety of delicious treats. Tinsley Newman is working with her grandfather to build a homemade charcuterie/cutting board to sell with a gift certificate in an online raffle. Raffle tickets will be $5 each and sold on Facebook or in person at Wethersfield’s annual basketball Turkey Tournament.

Be on the lookout for other projects that are still in the works. Projects will be publicized by the student’s family and friends, and on the Wethersfield social media pages.
