Tourney wins for KHS sophs, frosh

The Kewanee High School sophomore and freshman volleyball teams both won tournaments Saturday.

The Boiler Girls won first place Saturday at the Putnam County Sophomore Tournament. They defeated Newark 25-15, 25-20; Stark County 25-11, 25-9; and host Putnam County 25-6, 25-12  

The sophomore team is now 30-4 for the season. 

Damaris Diaz led the team in kills with 18, while Kolbie Cernovich and Macy Anderson each added 13. Kalleigh Gale and Kendyl DeBlieck had four and three kills on the day.

DeBlieck, the team’s primary setter, distributed 49 assists throughout the tournament. 

Diaz and Cernovich also had three blocks for the Boilers Girls. Claire Taylor led the team in digs with 11 and Remy Hicks had five.

Anderson and Gale came up big at the service line with nine and seven aces, respectively. Taylor, Hicks and DeBlieck added five, three and two aces. 

Kewanee High’s freshman volleyball ream won the Bureau Valley tourney Saturday.

The Boiler Girls won first place Saturday in the Bureau Valley Freshman Tournament. 

They had wins over Princeville 25-10, 25-14; Riverdale 25-23, 25-14; Bureau Valley 25-12, 25-14; and Fulton 23-25, 27-17, 15-7. 

The team has won all four tournaments it entered this season. 

Their season record is now 25-1-1.
