Titans get softball doubleheader win over Stark County

The Annawan-Wethersfield softball team was back in action Saturday and they scored a doubleheader win over Stark County (11-9, 11-1) to move to 3-4 on the season. After the two losses, the Rebels fall to 0-4.  

In the first game, the score was tied 3-3 before the Titans added six runs to go up 9-6 in the fifth inning. Annawan-Wethersfield then tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to extend their lead to 11-6. 

The Rebels scored three runs in their final at-bat, but their rally fell short in the 11-9 conference loss. 

Senior Sophie Nimrick earned the win for the Titans. She struck out eight batters while not allowing any walks. She surrendered nine hits and nine runs (four earned).

Aubri Stahl took the loss for the Rebels. She struck out and allowed seven walks. She surrendered 15 hits and 11 runs (10 earned). 

Titans 11, Stark County 9

Stark County took a 1-0 first inning lead after  Sophie Finnegan hit a triple and later scored off of a ground out by Payten Hillier. 

The Titans got on the board with three runs in the top of the third inning to go up 3-1. Paige Huffman tripled on a line drive to center field and Karsyn Rico scored on the play (1-1). 

Traidan Hier stepped up to the plate and hit a single to send Huffman home, giving Annawan-Wethersfield a 2-1 lead. Nimrick reached first on an error and Wavelynn Peart scored, giving the Titans a 3-1 lead.

Stark County bounced back with two runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 3-3. Hailey Peterson and Finnegan scored for the Rebels. 

The Titans scored three runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to extend their lead to 9-6. In the top of the fourth quarter, Annawan-Wethersfield hit three singles en route to scoring three runs. 

Elle Eastman, Elaina Manuel and Huffman all reached first on singles and Eastman, Lillie Bowen and Manuel scored for the 6-3 A/W fourth inning lead. 

The Titans hit four more singles and added three more runs in the top of the fifth inning for the 9-3 lead. Hitting singles were Brynn Harker, Eastman, Karsyn Rico and Hier. Eastman, Harker and Rico all reached home, giving Annawan-Wethersfield a 6-run advantage. 

The Rebels scored three more runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth inning. With runners on first and second, Hillier hit a double and Peterson scored (9-4). Finnegan and Hillier rounded out the scoring at 9-6 with two innings remaining. 

Neither team scored in the sixth inning, but the Titans added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. Nimrick and Hier each singled and Peart and Hier scored, giving Annawan-Wethersfield an 11-6 lead. 

Peterson and Emily Demetreon reached base on single hits in the bottom of the seventh inning. Peterson, Finnegan and Demetreon scored, but the Stark County rally stalled and the Titans prevailed, 11-9.

At the plate:

Paige Huffman led the Titans’ offense. She went 3-3, hitting a triple, 3 RBI and scoring a run. Hier had a good day at the plate as well. She was 3-4, with three RBI, 1 run and 1 walk. 

Rico went 2-4, with 3 RBI, 1 walk and 2 runs. Eastman was 2-4 while scoring 2 runs. Harker went 2-5, with 1 RBI and one 1 run. Peart was 1-2, scoring 2 runs and walking twice. Manuel (1-4, 1 run). Nimrick (1-4, 1 RBI). Bowen (1 run, 2 walks). 

Titans 11, Stark County 1

The Titans came up big in the fourth inning, scoring seven runs en route to making short work of the Rebels in an 11-1 five-inning win. 

Paige Huffman scored in the first inning to give Annawan-Wethersfield an early 1-0 lead. The Titans plated two more runs in the top of the second to expand their lead to 3-0.

Aaliyah Hayes doubled on a fly ball to right field and Elle Eastman and Hayes both scored after fielding errors by Stark County. 

Lauren Orwig scored the lone run for the Rebels in the bottom of the second inning for a score of 3-1. The Titans countered with another run in the third frame. Eastman singled on a line drive and Sophie Nimrick scored on the play, giving the Titans a lead of 4-1. 

Scoring runs for Annawan-Wethersfield in the productive fourth quarter were Huffman, Hier, Nimrick, Harker, Manuel, Eastman and Hayes. 

The Titans scored 11 runs off of 10 hits. Three of the 10 hits were doubles. Hitting doubles for Annawan-Wethersfield were Huffman, Manuel and Hayes. 

Picking up the win in the circle for the Titans was Wavelynn Peart. She recorded a no-hitter in five innings of play, while fanning three, walking three and giving up one unearned run. 

Brooklyn Ostrowski recorded the loss for Stark County. She struck out one batter and gave up seven walks, while surrendering 11 runs (five earned) off of 10 hits.

Eastman (2-3, 2 RBI, 2 runs). Huffman (2-4, 1 double, 3 RBI, 2 runs). Manuel (2-4, 1 double, 1 RBI, 1 run). Hayes (1-3, 1 double, 2 RBI, 2 runs). 

Nimrick (1-1, 2 walks, 1 RBI, 1 run). Hier (1-3, 1 walk, 1 RBI, 1 run). Peart (1-3, 1 walk). Harker (1 run).
