Slow start leads to loss for Boiler Girls

The Boiler Girls traveled to Cambridge Thursday night and suffered a 62-53 non-conference loss to the Ridgewood Spartans. 

Ridgewood erupted for 24 first-quarter points and had the Boiler Girls on their heels the remainder of the game. In the 24-14 first quarter, Mya Brown and Brinley Wirt each scored seven and Heidi Leander added six. 

Freshman Damaris Diaz had five for Kewanee and three Boiler Girls hit 3-point shots in the opening quarter (Mya Dearing, Bailey VanWinkle and Tejhiana Amos). 

The Boilers Girls outscored Ridgewood in the final three quarters 39-38, but Ridgewood’s big first quarter was too much to overcome. 

Diaz added eight more points in the second quarter and Avery Yepsen tossed in a three-pointer as the Boiler Girls outscored Ridgewood 15-11.

Brown scored on two 3-pointers to lead the Spartans to a 17-13 third quarter. VanWinkle hit another trey, while Dearing and Yepsen each added four to Kewanee’s 13-point total. 

In all, the Boiler Girls made eight 3-point shots for the game. In the 11-10 fourth quarter, Dearing, Bailey VanWinkle and Amos all made treys. 

Brown topped all scorers with 20 points. Leander and Wirt added 16 and 11, respectively, for Ridgewood. 

Diaz and Dearing each scored 14 for the Boiler Girls. Bailey VanWinkle, Amos and Yepsen added 10, eight and seven. 

The Boiler Girls host Stark County for a non-conference match up Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
