
The Kewanee baseball team used a 5-run seventh inning to propel the Boilers to a 9-2 win over Henry-Senachwine Saturday afternoon in Henry.
Kewanee had a 4-2 lead before adding five runs in the top of the seventh inning for the non-conference win. The Boilers are now 2-7 and the Mallards are 3-4-1 on the season.
Kewanee 9, Henry-Senachwine 2
The junior duo of Ben Taylor and Colson Welgat scored runs for Kewanee in the top of the first inning to give the Boilers an early 2-0 lead.
Mason Guarnieri scored a first inning run for the Mallards to get within one run of Kewanee at 2-1.
In second inning action, Kewanee senior Jackson Hawkins singled on a fly ball to left field, scoring junior Lincoln Mason. Welgat advanced to third on the play and later scored, giving Kewanee a 4-1 lead.
The bats then went silent for both teams until the sixth inning. Carson Rowe scored a run for Henry-Senachwine to close the gap, 4-2, heading into the top of the seventh inning.
Junior Brayden Conley scored a run off a single line drive by Taylor to extend Kewanee’s lead to 5-2. Welgat then singled on a hard ground ball to left field, sending home junior Dillon Price (6-2).
Hawkins then doubled on a fly ball, scoring Taylor and Welgat for a Kewanee lead of 8-2. For the final run of the day, junior Landon Sheets hit a single to right field and sophomore Abe Hicks scored for the 9-2 Kewanee win.
Mason was the winning pitcher for Kewanee. He struck out five batters and gave up one walk on the day. Mason also surrendered six hits and two runs (both earned) spread across six and two-thirds innings on the mound. Brady Schiltz appeared in relief for the Boilers.
Jacob Miller took the loss for the Mallards. He fanned three batters and gave up seven walks. Miller also surrendered seven hits and five runs (four earned).
Henry-Senachwine had six errors in the game while the Boilers were error-free on defense. The Mallards had six hits on the day.
