
The Kewanee Public Library District will be open on Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11, but will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27 and reopen on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 9 a.m. to allow staff to spend time with their families.
Disaster Preparedness – Nov. 14 at 2 p.m.
We’ve all learned the hard way that disasters can strike when we least expect it. Join the library staff on Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. when Kristin Bogdonas and Russell Medley from the University of Illinois Extension will be at the library to provide attendees with helpful hints to prepare for all disasters, whether that be tornado, arctic blast, fire, or blizzard, and maybe a few extra freebies that will get you one step closer to preparedness. A Brief Reintroduction of Native Americans in Illinois – Nov. 5 at 6 p.m.
Gerald Savage, a tribal elder with the Ho-Chunk Nation whose formal native name is Ho-Chunk Ska Ga (White Winnebago), will be at the library to discuss the reintroduction of his family into the Illinois Valley. He’ll share information on tribal customs and ways, the history of the tribe, modern natives, naming ceremonies, stereotypes, environmental concerns, tribal settlements and reservations. He carries on his grandfather’s tradition of teaching people about their tribal ways with his program about the history, past and present, from a Native perspective. Registration is not required. This event will be in the Community Room on the second floor.
Diamond Painting Bookmarks – Nov. 7 from 4-6 p.m.
Join the staff to create your own diamond painted bookmark. Supplies are limited, so registration is required. To register, stop by any of the service desks or call 309-852-4505.
Digital Literacy Class
Since there was still interest in the digital literacy classes, the library is bringing them back. Once again, available topics are Essential Computer Skills, which would be basic computer skills; Essential Software Skills, or office productivity skills; and Technology Tools in Daily Life, which will teach you practical computer skills.
If you have a more specific question, you are welcome to stop in during the class and staff will work with you to figure it out.
Meetings will be Wednesdays and will run from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Due to the early closing for the holiday, the Nov. 27 class will be moved up to run from 4 to 5 p.m. No registration is required to attend the classes; simply stop in. Chef Art Smith Author Talk – Nov. 20 at 7 p.m.
We have the last of the series of author talks this month. Author and chef, Art Smith, will discuss his culinary journey and will dish out some holiday tips and tricks. This event will be held on Zoom. Head to kewaneelibrary.org to find the link to the event. Don’t worry if you aren’t comfortable with a computer; the library will be having a live watch party in the Community Room on the second floor.

Classic Movies at the Carnegie
The first Friday of each month, the library will be holding Classic Movies at the Carnegie at 2 p.m. Join staff as they watch the classic movies that have remained brilliant through the years. Tween Programming
Tweens are invited to join the library staff on Nov. 12 at 3:30 p.m. for Coding for Tweens. Guest instructor Andrew Mansheim of Black Hawk College East Campus will be at the library to teach fun ways that coding can be used.
This event is limited to youth between the ages of 9 and 12. Registration is required as seats are limited. Please register with the Youth Services Staff by stopping by or calling at 309-852-4505.
Tweens may also stop by on Nov. 21 at 3:30 p.m. to make their own Thanksgiving bracelet.
Youth Programming
— Do you homeschool or know someone that does? Join staff Nov. 20 at 1:30 p.m. for the monthly Homeschooler’s Afternoon.
— Baby and Preschool Storytime continues this month. Through Nov. 19, infants through preschool age children and their adults are invited to attend Tuesdays at 11:15 a.m.
Stick around afterward for the Stay and Play Sensory Play Time. If you can’t make it in person, catch story time live on Facebook at 1 p.m. on Tuesdays. — If you’re interested in the Music and Movement Storytime, stop on Thursdays at 11:15 am and let’s get moving.
— Storybook STEAM this month will be on Nov. 18 at 3:30 p.m. Kindergarten through second-grade students are invited to listen to The Great Turkey Race by Steve Metzger and enjoy a fun challenge afterward.
— The library has two drop-in crafts planned this month. Elementary-age children are invited to stop by on Nov. 6, 7and 8 between 2 and 6 p.m. or Nov. 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to make their own flipbook.
— For preschool aged patrons, stop by Nov. 13, 14 and 15 between 2 and 6 p.m. for a Scarecrow Lunch Bag Puppet craft. To make either of these crafts alongside library staff, stop in at 3:30 pm on the weekdays and 11 am on Saturday.
— Don’t forget to stop by the library and get a Grab & Go craft of the month. This month, you can pick up a craft kit to make Scratch Off Leaves.
— Storytime to Go kits for preschoolers are back. This month, you can check out a Goldilocks and the Three Bears kit. Ask for one at the Youth Services Desk while supplies last.
Adult Book Club – Monday, November 18th @ 2 and 6 pm
The next meeting date of the Adult Book Club is Nov. 18, where we will be discussing Mad Honey by Jodi Picoult. As always, staff will hold two meetings, one at 2 p.m. and another at 6 p.m.; you’re invited to attend whichever time works the best for you. The library staff ask that anyone attending the evening meeting enter the building through the elevator entrance on First Street. Copies of the book are available for checkout at the Information Services desk on the lower level. We hope to see you there!
Henry County Genealogical Society
As part of their monthly meetings, the Henry County Genealogical Society welcomes a variety of interesting presenters. The meetings are the fourth Monday of each month at 1:30 p.m. in the library’s Community Room. The next meeting is Nov. 25.
Creativity @ the Carnegie
Do you enjoy knitting, crochet, embroidery, cross stitch or quilting? Come and join the fun at the Kewanee Public Library in the Community Room on the second Tuesday of each month from 4 to 6 p.m. This is an adult group sponsored by the Friends of the Kewanee Public Library for those who would like to enjoy the comradery of others while creating their own fiber projects.
