KHS wrestlers beat Mon-Rose, lose to Newman

The Kewanee High School wrestling team hosted Newman Central Catholic and Monmouth-Roseville Friday night at Brockman Gym. The Boilers defeated Monmouth-Roseville 54-24, but lost to a strong Newman Central Catholic team, 52-30.  

Newman is one of the toughest teams Kewanee will compete against this season. The Comets boast two returning state medal winners, Brady Grennan and Carter Rude. 

In the first team dual of the night, the score was tied between Newman and Mon-Rose going into the final two matches. Newman won the last two matches (Grennan and Rude) and the dual, 42-30.

Alejandro Duarte and Daniel Boswell won both of their matches by pin. Benjamin Taylor, Joey McGuire and Chance DeSplinter had single pin wins. 

Monmouth-Roseville

Winning by WBF (win by fall)/PIN against Monmouth-Roseville were:  

144 – Benjamin Taylor over Gybanhi Mendoza Velverde

175 – Joey McGuire over Landon Montoy

215 – Alejandro Duarte over Jaylyn Mendoza

285 – Daniel Boswell over Gavin Bell

Winning by decision was Landon Mason over Jekxel Rivera Ruiz (9-3) at 138 lbs. 

Winning by decision was Jackson Hawkins over Alex Gandarilla (6-2) at 190 lbs.

Winning by forfeit were Kingston Peterson (113), Landyn Greenhagen (120), Hunter Vancil (126) and Mikah Newton (150).  

Newman Central Catholic

Earning WBF/PIN against Newman Central Catholic were:

132 – Chance DeSplinter over Parker Strommen (1:43)

215 – Alejandro Duarte over Jacob Newberry (0:36)

285 – Daniel Boswell over Cooper Spears (0:40)

Winning by forfeit were Trenton Edens (113) and Landyn Greenhagen (126).
