“I’m looking forward to teaching kids about music and watching them find something they’re passionate about,” said Jersie Duytschaver.
Duytschaver is a senior at Kewanee High School and is involved with band, cheerleading, choir, key club, and theater.
Her passion in Music Education comes from wanting to make kids happy and her love of music. She explains that she wants to teach kindergarten and first grade, or high school.
Earlier this month, Duytschaver went to Belle Alexander Elementary to job shadow current Kewanee High School band director and elementary music teacher, Brittany Krohn. Throughout the day, the KHS senior was able to observe Krohn teach.
Duytschaver says, “You should have fun with the kids, because a lot of them look forward to music class. It was very inspiring to see her (Krohn) interact with the kids.”
When asked about Duytschaver’s inspiration, she said, “She (Krohn) is one of few teachers who have inspired me. The way she teaches varying grade levels is astonishing.”
In addition to watching Krohn at Belle, Duytschaver also has Krohn as a band director.
At the moment, Duytschaver doesn’t know where she will further her studies, but she knows she wants to go into music education.
“Music is something everybody can enjoy and I believe kids deserve the chance to learn and love music,” she said.
