Kewanee High School’s group interpretation team earned a sectional championship with its performance of Between the Lines.
The team now advances to the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) state finals.
Additionally, every cast member received all-sectional recognition.
Cast members honored were Aloria Button, Dalton Swearingen, Marcos Torres, Karina Wims, Abigail Wyant, Azucena Paredes, Alex Barron, Camila Herrera Soto, Da’Mya Brown, Caleb Wyant and Annie Campbell. The team is supported by student director Kailey Shaw.
IHSA group interpretation is a unique and highly competitive performing arts event in which students collaboratively bring literature to life through a coordinated ensemble performance.
Unlike traditional theater, the focus is not on elaborate sets or costumes, but on storytelling through voice, movement, and ensemble dynamics.
At the sectional and state levels, all competing schools are provided the same standardized set pieces, commonly referred to as “the boxes,” including platforms, cubes, ramps and stairs.
Students must use these shared materials creatively to develop setting, transitions and visual storytelling, placing the emphasis on interpretation, innovation and teamwork.
“Kewanee High School’s performance of Between the Lines distinguished itself through exceptional ensemble work, clear storytelling and purposeful physical interpretation of the storyline,” Supt. Rebecca Baney said. “The team’s ability to transform a common set of materials into a compelling and emotionally engaging performance reflects both artistic vision and disciplined preparation.
“This accomplishment speaks to the incredible talent and dedication of our students and director, Heather Olalde,” Baney said. “We are extremely proud the team’s hard work and dedication to this craft. Students must bring their best to interpret and portray multiple characters, the physical setting, and the mood of the story. Their work is art in its highest form.”
The state finals will be held March 26–28 at Reavis High School in Burbank.
“The Kewanee community celebrates this outstanding achievement and looks forward to supporting the Boilermakers as they compete on the state stage,” Baney said.
