Two new additions to the athletic program at Kewanee High School now bear names honoring two individuals for their contributions to the school.
At Monday’s meeting, the Kewanee School Board approved naming the new digital scoreboard in Brockman Gym at KHS for Frank Tocha; and the tennis center now under construction for David L. Sprague.
Tocha was a longtime girls basketball coach at KHS.
According to the Basketball Museum of Illinois, “Frank Tocha coached girls basketball for 28 years at Kewanee High School and compiled a 456-253 record (.643 winning percentage). His teams won eight IHSA regional championships and four NCIC titles. His 1988 team took fourth in the IHSA Class A state tournament with a 28-5 record.”
Putting Tocha’s name on the new scoreboard which was installed earlier this is a fitting honor for Tocha’s contributions to the school, board members felt.
The tennis center is being supported with a major financial gift from Sprague, a 1972 KHS graduate.
Sprague lives in Falls Church, Va. He is retired after working for the Federal Reserve Bank.
School board President Jeff Johnson, who is also the executive director of the Kewanee Schools Foundation, has been working with Sprague on how he can contribute to his alma mater.
The facility being built across Third Street from the high school will be named the David L. Sprague Tennis Center.
***This copy has been edited to correct David Sprague’s profession, which was reported as an attorney. Sprague is a retired program manager with the Federal Reserve Bank.
