One of the most anticipated races of the day was the 1600 meter run, featuring Kennady Anderson of Annawan-Wethersfield and Emily Downing of Cambridge. The two battled each other throughout the cross country season and, naturally, the matchup of long distance heavyweights has continued into the track season.

Anderson took the early lead, but Downing was on her heels throughout the first three and three quarter laps. Downing found an extra gear down the back stretch and caught Anderson just before the finish line. It’s rare to see a photo finish in a high school 1600 meter race, but that’s what the fans in attendance were treated to Tuesday night.

Downing had a winning time of 5:18.82 and Anderson was second in a time of 5:18.94.

There was a similar matchup in the two hurdles events. These two races featured Addison Wessel of BV and Rachel DeRycke of Kewanee. In the 100 hurdles, Wessell edged out DeRycke with a time 17.63. DeRycke clocked in at 17.71.

In the 300 meter hurdles, Wessell again won by the slimmest of margins. She had a winning time of 50.44 and DeRycke was second in a time of 50.83.
