The Boilers evened their record at 1-1 after defeating Geneseo 59-27 Wednesday at the Geneseo Thanksgiving Shootout. The Kewanee sophomores are now 2-0 after beating Geneseo 38-34 in second round play.

In the varsity game, Geneseo hit three treys in the early going and held a 13-12 lead heading into the second quarter. Junior Murray and Brady Clark each had five points for the Boilers in the first quarter.

“We started the game allowing Geneseo to get to their spots and they took advantage and knocked down three 3-pointers to grab the lead,” said Kewanee Coach Matt Clark.

Kewanee had a huge second quarter, outscoring Geneseo 27-0 to take a 39-13 lead at the half. Blaise Lewis made three of his four treys in the second quarter. The senior point guard had 10 total points in the frame.

Brady Clark and Davontae Jordan each contributed five points and Colson Welgat hit a three for the Boilers to close out the half. Clark scored nine of his 12 points in the first half.

“We weren’t playing with the defensive effort we were asking of them during pregame, but this is a coachable bunch of kids and the second quarter was a complete team effort at both ends,” added Clark.

Kewanee kept their momentum going in the third quarter, outscoring the Leafs 15-8. Lewis and Welgat each scored five points for the Boilers.

Greyden Lewis (3) and Kashen Ellerbrock scored Kewanee’s final five points of the game.

Blaise Lewis had a game-high 16 points, Clark had 12 and Welgat tallied 10 points.

“Having three players in double figures was great to see,” said Coach Clark. “Our ball movement was much improved from the first game and our defense turned into some easy opportunities, offensively, and the team seemed to feed off of the defense.”

Sophomores

The Kewanee sophs beat Geneseo 38-34 during Wednesday’s second round of games. Griffin Hicks made four 3-pointers enroute to scoring 16 points and Logan Peed scored 14 of his 15 points in the first half of play.

Freshman (non-tourney)

The KHS freshman squad lost their season opener to Rock Falls, 47-32. Six players scored in the game.
