In celebration of National Pet Week, May 4-8, students and staff at Irving Elementary School recently came together for a special “We Love Walter Day” to honor the school’s beloved therapy dog, Walter.
Throughout the week, students were invited to bring in donations such as pet food, treats, toys, blankets and cleaning supplies to benefit the Kewanee Animal Shelter. The event not only celebrated Walter’s positive impact on students each day, but also encouraged children to show kindness and compassion toward animals in need throughout the community.
Walter, a 5-year-old Golden Doodle, is a familiar and comforting presence at Irving Elementary and spends his days helping students feel calm, motivated, and supported at school.
Organizers said the idea for “We Love Walter Day” was inspired by the joy Walter brings to so many students and the opportunity to give back in his honor.
Donation boxes quickly filled with supplies, and students were excited to participate in a project that combined community service with their love for animals.
School staff shared that the event was a wonderful reminder of how even small acts of kindness can make a big difference for both people and pets.
