KEWANEE, Ill. — Kewanee School District leaders outlined their approach to strengthening agricultural education during a presentation at the Cultivating Connections in Ag Conference.

Superintendent Rebecca Baney and Kewanee High School Academic Advisor Heather Olalde led a session titled “Leveraging Assets to Build a Complete Agriculture Program: A Superintendent’s Perspective.” The presentation focused on how the district has expanded and stabilized its agriculture program in recent years.

Baney discussed the program’s growth during her early tenure as superintendent and described how the district aligned the program with board priorities and community needs. The framework she and Olalde presented emphasized identifying district goals, assessing available resources, using those assets effectively and reviewing progress to ensure long‑term sustainability.

Attendees also heard how partnerships with industry, alumni and community groups have supported program development and created opportunities for students.

“Our Agriculture Program reflects what is possible when we align mission, human capital and community support,” Baney said. “This work embodies our commitment to Inspire the Mind and Honor the Heart.”

Students from the Kewanee FFA chapter participated in the conference as well, sharing portions of their program of activities during a chapter showcase.

District officials said the work is part of a broader effort to strengthen agriculture education and expand college and career pathways for students.
