For me, the joy of baking bread is connected to memories with my mom, who I consider a true bread-baking expert. She was actively involved in 4-H in her younger years, leading many cooking demonstrations, and later became a 4-H leader, helping others develop skills like baking. I have fond memories of baking bread with her, and my favorite part was always kneading the dough on the countertop.

Bread-making can seem intimidating, but this recipe is simple. With just a few basic ingredients, you can create a beautifully golden, crispy loaf with a soft, chewy interior. It’s the perfect accompaniment to any meal, whether you’re serving it alongside soup, using it for sandwiches, or simply enjoying it warm with butter.

My mom provided this recipe and described it as “so easy,” claiming it only takes her a few minutes to prepare. Once baked, she likes to brush the top with butter and sprinkle it with sesame seeds for an extra touch of flavor. Adding rosemary, garlic or Italian seasoning are other delicious options.

Give this recipe a try—you’ll be amazed at how effortless homemade bread can be.

From mom’s kitchen to yours — enjoy!

Perfectly Easy Bread

Makes 1 large loaf

Ingredients:

  • 1 ¼ c. warm water (about 110°F)
  • 1 T. sugar
  • 2 t. active dry yeast
  • 3 ½ c. all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
  • 1 ½ t. salt
  • 1 T. olive oil
  • butter
  • sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Activate the Yeast – In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients – In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt.
  3. Combine Wet and Dry – Pour the activated yeast mixture into the dry ingredients. Add olive oil. Stir until a rough dough forms.
  4. Knead – Transfer dough to a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. First Rise – Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1-1½ hours until doubled.
  6. Shape the Dough – Punch down, shape into a loaf (round or long/narrow), and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet or oven-safe dish or pan.
  7. Second Rise – Cover and let rise for 30-40 minutes.
  8. Bake – Preheat the oven to 450°F. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Cool and Serve – Let cool before slicing. Enjoy warm with butter or alongside your favorite meal.
