Two close games, two wins.

That’s how the Wethersfield Flying Geese opened the Lincoln Trail Conference boys basketball tournament.

Game one on Monday was a 58-55 win over Monmouth United. On Tuesday, the Geese won another squeaker, 51-49 over Stark County.

Wethersfield trailed United by two after the first quarter, but outscored them 15-8 in the second.

Landon Sauer and Colin Horback led a strong third quarter for the Geese, scoring 6 and 7 points respectively to increase Wethersfield’s lead to 46-40 after three quarters.

The Red Storm made a comeback effort in the fourth quarter, but Sauer scored 10 of Wethersfield’s 12 points in the quarter and the Geese held on for the three-point win.

Tuesday’s win over the Rebels required a comeback effort, as Stark County led 30-18 at the half.

Led by Zeb Rashid, who scored all 13 of his points in the second half, Wethersfield outscored the Rebels 18-11 in the third quarter and trailed 36-31.

The Geese scored 15 in the final frame and held the Rebels to just eight, all on free throws.
