A group of Galesburg homeschool students took a field trip to Kewanee a few weeks ago. Students from the Friends School Collective, along with their parents, visited the Voice office for a tour of the new facilities and Sullivan’s Foods.

At the Voice’s office, the students learned how local news is produced and three of the students agreed to be interviewed. With just a week to go before Thanksgiving, the students, Kell Walton, Zane Dirks and Carson Martinez told the group what they are thankful for this year, with Kell saying he was thankful to be going to his grandma’s house for Thanksgiving, while Carson said he’s thankful for God and Zane said he was thankful for his family.

The students also were asked their favorite Thanksgiving dish with the answers ranging from pumpkin pie to turkey and rolls.

Darcy Walton, one of the parent chaperones that day, said the collective of homeschool families came about out of necessity. After a co-op they belonged to “ceased to exist,” several families agreed to join together. The group meets up for science and history projects at The Hub in Galesburg. They also take field trips together, such as the one they took to Kewanee, to places like the Galesburg Fire Station and Tanners Orchard.

After a pizza lunch and cupcakes at the Voice office, the group toured Sullivan’s Foods grocery store in Kewanee
