Bravettes reach 20-win plateau

By Jami Townsend    January 30, 2024

The Annawan Bravettes notched their 20th win of the season with a bruising 63-34 victory over the Stark County Rebels Monday night in Toulon. The Bravettes move to 20-5 overall and 7-1 in LTC play, while Stark County falls to 3-22 and 1-7 in the conference.

The Bravettes were forced to play without their main post player, Zoey Vance, so senior forward Kaylee Celus slid into the post position. The move apparently suited Celus as she put up a career high 30 points against the Rebels.

Showcasing her versatility, Celus scored two 3-pointers in transition to round out her career night. “The girls played well tonight,” said Annawan Coach Jason Burkiewicz. “Kaylee had a 30-point night so we were happy for her. She was outstanding.”

Annawan raced to a 23-5 first quarter lead and pushed the lead to 33-13 at the break. Celus scored 18 points in the first half and Clara Bella VanOpdorp chipped in with eight.

The Bravettes continued their onslaught in the third quarter, outscoring the Rebels 25-9. Celus tacked on another dozen in the frame and VanOpdorp added six.

Kenna Newton scored seven of the Rebels’ nine tåhird-quarter points.

Stark County outscored Annawan 12-5 in the final quarter and Peyton Hillier topped the Rebels with seven points.

Following Celus in scoring for Annawan were VanOpdorp with 14, Olivia Goodley with eight and Elaina Manuel chipped in with seven points.

Hillier led Stark County with 13 points, Newton had nine and Emily Demetreon scored six in vain.

Annawan will host Princeville (14-10, 5-2) on Wednesday. The frosh-soph game will start at 5 p.m. and the varsity game will follow at 7:30 p.m.
