Bravettes fall to West Central

By Jami Townsend    December 6, 2023

The Annawan Bravettes faced another tough LTC opponent Monday night at Biggsville. The West Central Heat came out on the winning end of the battle, 60-49.

“It was a tough night of shooting for our girls,” said Annawan Coach Jason Burkiewicz. “We also had an All-State defender at home sick. Even so, we needed to shoot better and adjust to the way the game is called without having it rattle us,” Burkiewicz added.

West Central has an All-State player as well. Senior Shelby Bowman showed why she was an AP Class 1A First Team selection last year. As a junior, Bowman averaged 28 points a clip. Last night she steadily scored 39 points (19 in the first half and 20 in the second half).

The Heat maintained a seven-point lead throughout much of the game (31-24 at the half and 42-35 after the third quarter).

Elaina Manuel,  Zoey Vance and Clara Bella VanOpdorp scored nine, eight and five points in the first half.

VanOpdorp and Manual contributed eight and seven, respectively in the second half.

Bowman did the brunt of the scoring for West Central. No other player scored in double figures.

Three Annawan players scored in double digits. Manual has 16, VanOpdorp 13 and Vance added 12.

Annawan is 7-2, 1-1 and West Central is 6-2, 2-0.
