
The Kewanee Boiler Girls hit the road Saturday and came away with a lopsided 61-20 non-conference win over Farmington (4-19).
The young Boiler Girls squad (8-15, 4-3) struggled early in the season, but they’ve won five out of their last eight games.
In the win over Farmington, Kewanee jumped out to an 18-5 first quarter lead, thanks in large part to their hot shooting beyond the arc. The Boiler Girls made nine 3-pointers in the game (four in the first quarter and six total in the first half).
Junior point guard Mya Dearing made two treys, and åfreshman forward Damaris Diaz and senior guard Hannah Tiska each made one in the first quarter.
The Kewanee lead ballooned to 24 points by the end of the first half at 31-7. Junior forward Tejhiana Amos made two 3-pointers and led the Boiler Girls with eight points in the second frame.
Amos scored 10 first half points and Dearing added eight.
Not satisfied, Kewanee pounced in the third quarter and erupted for 26 points while holding the Farmers to just seven.
Dearing and freshman Bailey VanWinkle scored seven apiece and sophomore Taylor VanWinkle added four as Kewanee led 57-14 with one quarter left to play.
All ten players on Kewanee’s roster scored in the game. Dearing scored a game-high 15 points and Amos followed with 13 in the win.
Fresh-soph
The Boiler Girls also recorded a lopsided win at the fresh-soph level, defeating Farmington by a score of 51-21. The fresh-soph team is now 14-7 overall and 5-0 in TRAC-East play.
Kewanee led 17-3 after one quarter and 29-10 at the half. Kieryn Abernathy and Audrey Clucas each scored six in the first half.
The Boiler Girls outscored Farmington 16-6 in the third quarter and increased their lead to 45-16 after three quarters of play.
Abernathy and Clucas scored eight points each in the win. Nonie Charlet added seven and Lillie Hampton and Isabelle Vargas scored six apiece.
All 11 players on the team scored in the contest.
