Boiler Girls suffer loss to Fulton

The rollercoaster-like season continues for the Kewanee softball team. The Boilers Girls suffered an 11-3 road loss to the Fulton Steamers on Wednesday. 

The non-conference game was the fourth consecutive loss for the Boiler Girls who slip to 10-8 on the season. The Steamers move to 18-4 and are ranked No.12 in Class 1A via ICA polling (Illinois Coaches Association). 

Fulton jumped out to an 11-0 third inning lead before the Boiler Girls were able to get any offensive traction. Kewanee put up three runs in the top of the fourth inning, but both teams were shut out the remaining three innings and Fulton went on to win, 11-3.

The Steamers didn’t waste any time getting runs on the board. During the teams’ first at-bat, Resse German hit a 2-run homer, giving Fulton a 2-0 lead.

The Steamers added five runs in the second inning to expand the lead, 7-0. Fulton then tacked on another four runs in the bottom of the third inning to mount an 11-0 lead. 

The Boilers Girls found some give in the Fulton defense in the top of the fourth inning. Hannah Tiska hit a single, sending home Alison Bartell for Kewanee’s first run of the game. 

Hope Peed then reached first on an error, plating Lyric Duytschaver for a score of 11-2. Tiska scored on a passed ball for the Boiler Girls’ final run of the game at 11-3. 

The KHS defense held for the remaining three innings, forcing a three and out in the fourth inning. Kewanee pitcher Cheyanne Rodgers struck out 2 of 4 batters in the fifth inning and struck out the side in the bottom of the sixth inning. 

On the mound…

Addison Hartman went the distance in the win for Fulton. She struck out seven and gave up three walks, while surrendering six hits and three runs (all earned). The Steamers had three errors in the game. 

Rodgers suffered the loss for Kewanee. In her four innings in the circle, she struck out six and walked two, while giving up five hits and seven runs (2 earned). Kewanee had three errors in the game. 

At the plate…

Duytschaver was 3-3 at the plate and scored one run for Kewanee. Tiska went 1-3, had one run, one RBI and one walk. Peed was 1-4 and had one RBI and Macee Pickering was 1-4 on the night.
