After two weeks of traveling, the Wethersfield road warriors were finally able to enjoy playing on their home volleyball court Monday night. The result was a 2-set conference win over visiting Princeville (25-17, 25-17).
The Geese improve to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in LTC play. Princeville falls to 5-8 and 0-2 in the conference.
In game one action, Princeville jumped out to an early 7-4 lead. The seasoned WHS front line then went on attack mode.
After consecutive kills by Kendall Vincent and Sophie Nimrick, Cora Hodge served an ace to knot the score at eight.
A few plays later, Lajaya Angel buried a spike down the left side to give the Lady Geese their first lead at 10-9, which was a lead they’d never relinquish.
Later in the first game, Princeville’s Brianna Brody had a couple big hits through the middle of Wethersfield’s frontline defense, but the Lady Geese maintained a 19-14 lead.
After consecutive kills by Vincent from the outside and another down the middle by Angel, the WHS lead extended to 22-14. Angel then put down the final kill (and point) of the first game to preserve the 25-17 Wethersfield win.
Early in the second game, Vincent had two kills to help Wethersfield take a 7-3 advantage. Later, the front court tandem of Raqi Young and Angel joined forces for a big block and Kennady Anderson laid down a kill for the 10-6 WHS lead.
Young later set up Emersyn Nelson for a strong put away kill, which gave the Lady Geese a lead of 13-7. Midway through the frame, Princeville’s Greta Dwyer served an ace as PHS closed the gap, 14-11.
Wethersfield’s Anderson later recorded her third ace of the match to stretch WHS’s lead to 17-11.
The longest volley of the night happened late in the second game. It was Anderson who, ultimately, spiked the point winner over the middle to give WHS the 23-16 lead.
Anderson added another kill and Emersyn Nelson recorded her fifth of the match to close out the 25-17 WHS win.
Leading the Lady Geese attack were Vincent and Anderson who had 9 and 7 kills, respectively. Angel and Nelson added 5 apiece. Young, Wethersfield’s primary setter, dished out 25 assists.
Angel and Young teamed up for 3 blocks. WHS libero, Hodge, defended the back row with 10 digs. Vincent and Angel each added 4.
It was a clean sweep for the Lady Geese. The sophomores won (25-17, 25-15) and the freshmen squad won in two sets as well (25-15, 25-14).
