According to the weather app on my phone this weekend the temperatures look to be downright inhospitable, leaving many people opting to stay home and hibernate. So put on a pot of chili, pop in a favorite movie or grab a good book and hunker down safe and warm inside.
But for those suffering from cabin fever and looking to get out then school sports just may be your saving grace. See area teams and times below. But before you warm up the car and head out, I recommend you double check to make sure events haven’t been rescheduled.

On Saturday grab the kids and their favorite stuffed animal and check out the Teddy Bear Hospital at Black Hawk College East Campus. This is a great way to introduce and inform kids on veterinary science career opportunities and at the same time give their “stuffy” its annual checkup. The event is free, but they would kindly accept donations as it is a fundraiser for the local animal shelter. See the Voice’s “Teddy Bear Hospital returns to BHC’s East Campus” article for a list of suggested donation items.
For poetry lovers, head to Galva and check out the Galva Arts Council’s Poetry Out Loud open mic night at 128 Exchange St. from 6:30 – 9 p.m. on Saturday evening. Audience members are welcome to share and read their own works.

As the new week arrives the temperatures are supposed to heat up a little and so does the event calendar with Crossroads Cultural Connections presenting two concerts. Monday evening Christine Tassan et les Imposteures and on Wednesday Chloe Kimes, both will appear at Bishop Hill Commons with potlucks and social hours at 6 p.m. and concerts at 7 p.m.
