This is a 15-minute video I made in honor of my uncle and namesake, who died 80 years ago on October 20, 1944, when his ship, the U.S.S. Honolulu, was struck by a torpedo from a Japanese plane in Leyte Gulf during the invasion of the Philippines led by General Douglas McArthur. Dean’s body was never recovered. He was one of four Karau boys who followed in the footsteps of their father in serving friends, family, community and country in the military during wartime.
