Take the survey: Let us know your thoughts on Kewanee’s new trash service

By The Kewanee Voice    November 1, 2024

For years, Kewanee city employees picked up trash and recyclables from local residents. But this summer, the Kewanee City Council decided to make a change. They contracted with LRS Waste Management to pick up residents’ trash and recyclables.

LRS operates the Atkinson Landfill, where Kewanee’s trash and recyclables have been taken for the past few years. They also handle trash and recycling pickup for a number of area communities.

There have been changes to the pickup service, especially the recycling.

Previously, Kewaneeans who recycled had to separate paper from cans and plastic, put them in recycling bags and carry them to the curb.

Now, all Kewanee households have received recycling carts that look like the garbage carts the city has used for a few years. All recyclables can be tossed into the cart; separating the items is no longer required.

Yet another change is that the trash and recyclable pickup can go on until 7 p.m. In the past, city crews usually completed their routes by late afternoon.

Residents were given a phone number to call if there were problems with their pickup service. Now that LRS has been providing trash removal service in Kewanee for several months, The Kewanee Voice would like to know what people think of the service.

We are asking residents to please take a few minutes to answer a five-question survey about the new service. We’ll publish the results in the near future. We appreciate your help.
