Tag Days fundraiser for tutoring program to be held over Labor Day weekend

By The Kewanee Voice    August 27, 2024

A Tag Days Fundraiser for the Step Ladder Tutoring Program is set for Labor Day weekend Friday and Saturday, Aug. 30 and 31 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers will be stationed at Save-a-lot and Walmart stores to accept donations.

The Sunshine Community Services Center successfully completed its Step Ladder Summer Tutoring session at the Kewanee Public Library on July 31, and started their fall session on August 19.

Participating students receive help with homework, projects, test preparation, free books, snacks, and school supplies as needed throughout the year.

The nonprofit agency’s semi-annual Tag Days fundraisers provide opportunities for students to give back to the community. The tutoring services are free to seventh and eighth grade students at both Kewanee and Wethersfield Jr. High Schools.

“We sincerely appreciate the continued support from both school districts, volunteers, AmeriCorps members, staff who have tutored during the last 13 years; all of the foundations, businesses and individuals who have donated to our organization,” said Etta LaFlora, executive director of Sunshine Community Services Center.

The tutoring program’s goal is to help middle school students become more responsible for their own education and strive to better prepare themselves for the future.

“The schools have done a great job in working with us as we assist students in our program,” said LaFlora.
