Kewanee drivers are being advised to slow down this month as the Kewanee Police Department is taking part in a statewide campaign to reduce speeding.
Local police are partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), the Illinois State Police and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies to step up speed enforcement efforts.
Throughout July, motorists can expect increased patrols looking for speeding and other traffic violations.
“Speeding creates unnecessary danger on our roads,” said Kewanee Police Chief Stephen Kijanowski. “Driving at excessive speeds significantly reduces a driver’s ability to safely steer around another vehicle, avoid a hazardous object or navigate an unexpected curve.
“Drivers who speed place themselves, their passengers and other motorists at serious risk,” Kijanowski said.
During the speeding enforcement blitz, officers will intensify enforcement of posted speed limits.
“Drivers who violate speed laws will be stopped and ticketed, especially in areas where speeding creates the greatest safety concerns,” said Kijanowski. “Our goal is to save lives.”
The speed enforcement effort is made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by IDOT.
