The specifics behind the large sinkhole that opened last week near Rose and Boss streets remain unclear.

A message left for Public Works Director Chris Berry seeking information has not been returned.

An employee with Laverdiere Construction of Macomb, the company handling repairs, said the sinkhole formed when an old manhole “blew out.”

By Monday morning, crews had used an excavator to dig around the sinkhole to a depth of several feet.

One Laverdiere worker noted that similar sinkholes could potentially occur near other aging manholes in the city.

City-hired engineers have previously reported that Kewanee has miles of aging water and sewer infrastructure. Some pipes are more than 100 years old, and many others were installed before 1940.
