Shadowlands takes the stage at Cà d’Zan House Concerts Sept. 29

By The Kewanee Voice    September 26, 2025

Cà d’Zan House Concerts is set to present another great evening of music with Shadowlands, the collaborative project of S. Carey, longtime Bon Iver member, and John Raymond, a Grammy-nominated jazz trumpeter. This one-of-a-kind concert will take place on Monday, Sept. 29 in Cambridge.

The evening begins with a community potluck and social hour from 6- 7 p.m., followed by the concert at 7 p.m. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for comfortable outdoor seating. Suggested donation is $20–30, and the event is intended for all ages.

For nearly two decades, S. Carey and John Raymond have followed parallel yet distinct musical journeys. Carey became the right-hand man to Justin Vernon – Bon Iver, collaborated with artists such as Sufjan Stevens and Bruce Hornsby, and released critically acclaimed solo albums praised by Pitchfork and NPR. Raymond carved out a career as an internationally recognized jazz trumpeter, releasing eight albums – including four Grammy-nominated projects and earning acclaim from Downbeat Magazine for “steering jazz in the right direction.”

Shadowlands is the convergence of these worlds: a blend of indie folk, jazz, cinematic pop, and subtle electronic textures. Recorded in the woods of Eau Claire, Wis. – where Carey and Raymond first met as students – their self-titled release showcases breathy vocals, lyrical horn lines, and an interplay that is both intimate and expansive.

“The music of Shadowlands really feels like home,” says John Raymond. “It has this ethereal quality where you can let your guard down and be fully present. That’s what we hope people experience when they hear us live.”

Carey said, “When John and I first started working on this project, it was an experiment. But the music grew into something far more meaningful. Playing these songs in a space like Cà d’Zan is exactly the kind of intimate, shared moment that Shadowlands was created for.”

Best known as a member of the Grammy-winning indie folk band Bon Iver, Sean Carey is also an acclaimed solo artist. His solo albums have earned praise from major outlets including Pitchfork and NPR, and he has collaborated widely with artists such as Sufjan Stevens, Mason Jennings and Low.

A boundary-pushing jazz trumpeter and composer, John Raymond has been hailed as one of the most exciting voices in modern jazz. He has performed internationally, collaborated with a wide array of artists, and is known for seamlessly bridging improvisational jazz with other genres.

Join them for an unforgettable evening with two world-class musicians as they share their new project in the intimate and welcoming setting of Cà d’Zan House Concerts.
