GENESEO, Ill. — The Geneseo Farmers Market, a longstanding tradition in the community, has evolved significantly over its more than 25-year history.
Originally a loosely organized collection of local farmers and gardeners selling fresh produce, the market has grown into an anticipated seasonal event featuring a diverse range of vendors and products.
“For many years there were just a handful of vendors, but in the past five years it has seen a real growth in the number of vendors and types of products being sold,” said Jill Darin, market coordinator.

The market now boasts approximately 65 full-time and part-time vendors during the summer and winter seasons and offers a variety of goods, including fresh produce, baked items, meats, crafts and health and beauty products. Locally grown fruits and vegetables, farm-fresh eggs, honey and homemade baked goods such as sourdough breads and fruit pies are popular staples.
Customers can also find unique handmade crafts, from quilts and jewelry to 3D-printed items and tie-dyed clothing. Vendors also offer home décor, fused glass art and silk flower arrangements. Local organizations, including the Geneseo-Atkinson Food Pantry and Hammond Henry Hospital, frequently participate, connecting with the community.
Darin plays a central role in organizing and running the market.
“On average, there are several hundred individuals and families that come through a typical Saturday market,” she said. “During Saturdays when the Geneseo Chamber of Commerce is hosting events in Geneseo, the market will see a large spike in attendance. The market appreciates the efforts of the Chamber, of which the market is a member, to bring events and people to the city.”

Darin said without their customers, there wouldn’t be a market, and expressed gratitude for the community support.
The winter market’s final event of the season will take place on Saturday, April 12, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Geneseo Moose Lodge, 1025 South State St. The summer market begins on the first Saturday of June and runs through October, held every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon on Pearl Street at Geneseo City Park. Some Saturdays feature extended hours.
A pre-season meeting for vendors is scheduled for Thursday, April 24, at 5:30 p.m. at the City Park Pavilion. Interested vendors can contact Darin at geneseofm@gmail.com to apply. The market requires vendors to meet guidelines for locally grown produce, licensed cottage foods and homemade crafts.
