A report to Kewanee police Monday of a man wearing a bulletproof vest turned out to be false, police reported.
Police notified local schools of the report, but it turned out that man was wearing an exercise vest and was not armed.
According to a news release issued Monday afternoon, a report came in to police from 10th and Vine streets of a man who appeared to be wearing a bulletproof vest and carrying firearms.
“The caller also provided a general physical and clothing description,” the release said.
Police searched the area but couldn’t find anyone matching the description. There were no more calls to police reporting the man.
“Based in the information available at the time, and out of an abundance of caution, local schools were notified of the report while officers continued to search for the subject,” the news release said,
Police soon contacted a resident in the area “who matched the general physical and clothing description provided by the caller,” according to the news release. “The resident explained that they had been exercising while wearing a weighted training vest, which was shown to officers,” the release said.
“The investigation determined that the individual was wearing a weighted exercise vest and rhat there was no armed subject or ongoing threat associated with the incident,” according to the news release.
