Kewanee High School Principal Rebecca Baney will be the first female superintendent of the Kewanee School District.

On a unanimous vote, the Kewanee School Board Monday named Mrs. Baney to succeed Dr. Chris Sullens as superintendent.

Sullens will retire at the end of this school year.

Mrs. Baney has been a teacher and administrator in the Kewanee School District for 23 years.

After earning her teaching degree at Indiana State University, she joined the Kewanee High School faculty as a sophomore English teacher.

During her career, Mrs. Baney said, she has held “various leadership roles” throughout the Kewanee School District. She headed the instructional coaching program when it was established several years ago, and was principal at Belle Alexander School.

Mrs. Baney is now the first female principal in the history of Kewanee High School.

She earned her master’s degree in educational leadership with a superintendency endorsement from Western Illinois University, where she is now pursuing her doctorate in educational leadership.
