Police plan July 4 traffic enforcement campaign

By The Kewanee Voice    June 18, 2026

Kewanee drivers are on notice to be on their best driving behavior over the coming weeks.

The Kewanee Police Department has announced its Fourth of July traffic enforcement campaign, with officers focusing on impaired driving and seat belt violations. The campaign will mean an increase in traffic stops that could result in citations for area drivers.

The safety effort will run from June 19 through July 6, covering three summer weekends before, during, and after Independence Day.

“We want everyone to enjoy Independence Day, but we also want everyone to make it home safely,” said Chief Stephen Kijanowski. “If you plan to drink, use cannabis or use any other impairing substance, make sure you have a sober ride. Our officers will be out looking for impaired drivers and making sure drivers and passengers are buckled up.”

Kewanee police will join the Illinois State Police and more than 200 local police and sheriff’s departments as part of this statewide enforcement effort.

“To celebrate safely, designate a sober driver and don’t let friends or family members drive impaired,” Kijanowski said.

Other important tips include:

Give your designated driver your keys before you go out.

If you are impaired by alcohol, cannabis or any other drug, call a taxi, use a ride-sharing service or call a sober friend or family member to get you home safely.

Promptly report impaired drivers to law enforcement by pulling over and dialing 911.

Make sure everyone in your vehicle wears their seat belt. Not only is it the law, but it’s also your best defense against an impaired driver.

The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Drive High Get a DUI” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns are made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The enforcement efforts are complemented by IDOT’s “It’s Not a Game” media campaign, which emphasizes the serious consequences of impaired driving and other unsafe driving behaviors.
