Pet of the week: Poppy takes center stage

By The Kewanee Voice    April 7, 2026
Poppy is looking forward to meeting you.

Poppy, a one-year-old heeler mix, is stepping into the spotlight this week with hopes of finding her forever home.

She and her sister were surrendered to the shelter in February. Both were shy at first but have since come out of their shells. Poppy’s sister has already received an adoption application, and now it’s Poppy’s turn at a forever home.

High energy barely begins to describe this 28.5-pound pup. After spending her first year confined to a small space, she’s had limited opportunities to learn commands. She’s mastered “sit” and is eager to learn more, especially with someone who has the time and patience to guide her.

Poppy is treat-motivated, highly intelligent and a quick learner, making her a great candidate for training. She loves playing fetch and has nailed the “fetch” part—though she’s still working on the return.

Each morning, Poppy looks forward to her canned food breakfast, which fuels her for a day of nonstop activity. Since arriving at the shelter, she’s enjoyed the freedom to roam and has become very physically active, often running, jumping and barking.

Because of her energy level, she may not be the best fit for families with small children. She would thrive in a one-on-one setting with someone who can give her the attention she deserves. Poppy enjoys playing outside with her sibling but can be reactive if other dogs enter their space.

Poppy is scheduled to be spayed next week. She’s already received her rabies and distemper vaccines, has been dewormed and flea-treated, and tested negative for heartworm. She is currently on heartworm prevention medication.

To meet this smart, high-energy and lovable companion, call the shelter at 309-852-0040 or stop by during visitor hours. Poppy’s adoption fee is $100.
