Pet of the week: Meet Franklin, the ‘gentle giant’

By The Kewanee Voice    January 13, 2026
Come meet Franklin “Frankie” today.

Meet Franklin or Frankie for short. Frankie came to the Henry County Humane Society of Kewanee as a stray, so while they don’t know much about his background, he is male, a mixed breed and possibly part American Pitbull Terrier and part mastiff.

Staff describe him as big, handsome and a real sweetheart. They call him the gentle giant. He is potty trained, walks well on a leash, knows the command to sit and is very treat motivated which is great as they continue to work on this training. He takes treats gently when offered.

Frankie likes everyone, enjoys being with people and getting lots of ear rubs and back scratches. He does well with children, but the humane society said because of his large size, toddlers could get bumped over during playtime. He doesn’t show much interest in other dogs and is curious about cats.

Frankie is fully vetted (which includes neutering, rabies and Bordetella vaccinations, flea treatment,) and he is microchipped. He is heartworm negative and has started his monthly heartworm preventative medication.

The adoption fee for Frankie is $100.

To meet Frankie, contact the humane society at 309-852-0040 during business hours, 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
