Pet of the week: Fern, small and mighty vocal

By The Kewanee Voice    April 14, 2026

Fern may be small in stature, but she’s never had any trouble making herself heard.

This petite tabby arrived at the shelter last September as a 3‑month‑old stray picked up by local police. She was shy at first, taking her time to adjust to her new surroundings. Since then, she has settled in beautifully and now gets along well with all the cats and kittens in her room. She hasn’t been around dogs, so her reaction to them is unknown.

Once Fern learned to trust the staff and volunteers, her personality came forward loud and clear—literally. Weighing just 6.5 pounds, she has a surprisingly big voice and isn’t shy about using it. When she wants attention, she’ll give you a holler. When she’s hungry, she’ll let out a series of loud meows until her favorite food or treat arrives.

Fern can seem a little timid when first picked up, but once she’s in your arms, she relaxes and loves to tuck herself under your chin. She’s also a champion napper, and a stack of soft blankets is her idea of a perfect afternoon.

Fern was recently spayed and will have her stitches removed at the end of the week. All of her other vetting is complete, including her rabies vaccine, FVRCP, deworming, flea treatment and microchip.

This adorable little love bug would make a wonderful addition to any family. If you’d like to meet Fern and hear her big voice for yourself, stop by the shelter during visiting hours or call 309‑852‑0040. Her adoption fee is $60.
