Customers pulled into the parking lot at the new Dollar General store on the north side of town Thursday only to be turned away. In spite of the sign on the front of the building that reads “Now Open,” the store is very much closed.
Workers were inside the building stocking shelves, but one employee said he wasn’t able to discuss the details surrounding the store’s opening and referred the matter to the corporate public relations department.

For many years, the retail store called the shopping center on the south side of town home. North side residents were excited about the store’s new location and a chance to have a retail store on their end. But online, social media discussion has centered on possible reasons that the store has yet to open.
The Dollar General was expected to open on Sept. 28, but that deadline came and went. For two days in early October, the store opened for business before closing its doors again. It’s remained closed ever since.
The Kewanee Voice reached out to the Dollar General public relations department for a comment but has yet to hear back. The story will be updated as more information becomes available.
