150th anniversary party: Celebrating 150 years of serving our community

Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. The main floor will have refreshments, giveaways, a photo booth area and more, but there will be activities on every floor of the building.

That night is also the opening night of the annual art show.  The includes a display of artworks by local youth in the second-floor children’s room.

Puzzle swap – Oct. 7

From 3- 6 p.m. bring in your gently-used puzzles and swap them out for new ones.

The Friends of the Library invite you to celebrate 150 years of our library

Sunday, Oct. 26 from 2-4 p.m., the Friends of the Library will host a special 150th anniversary open house. Music from the last 150 years will be performed by local choirs, and there will be displays of the historic bestsellers, historic photos, refreshments and more. 

Barry Cloyd presents Samhain: The Celtic Roots of Halloween — 6 p.m. Oct. 9

Did you know the roots of Halloween go back as far as over 2,000 years? Marking the end of summer and the harvest season and the start of winter, the Celtic celebration of Samhain has survived through the centuries. Join award-winning singer/songwriter Barry Cloyd as he takes us back to Celtic times, where it all began, and brings life to the tales and songs of this ancient celebration.

Friends of the Library annual meeting – Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.

Mike DeWalt and Steve Morrison will present “Celebrating 150 Years of Our Kewanee Library: The People and the Places.” One need not be a member of the Friends to attend. The meeting is open to the public.

Cinema at the Carnegie Spooktacular – Oct. 30 at 5:30 p.m.

The beloved Halloween classic “Hocus Pocus” will be shown. Follow the Sanderson sisters on their wickedly funny adventure while you enjoy a selection of spooky snacks provided by the library.

Fall health check clinic Oct. 22 9:30-11:30 a.m.

The clinic offered by the Henry County Health Department, First Choice Healthcare and the Kewanee Public Library District will feature blood pressure checks, vital signs checks, and blood glucose screenings free of charge for anyone 18 and older.

The clinic will also provide free flu shots to those who have Medicare or medical insurance. To receive the shot, bring your Medicare and/or insurance card with you.  For thud without insurance, flu shots are available for $60.

DIY Halloween sculpey jewelry – Oct. 23 at 5 p.m.

Make your favorite Halloween theme into jewelry using sculpey clay.

Evalyn Walsh McLean and the Curse of the Hope Diamond watch party

Road Scholar online lecture “Evalyn Walsh and the Curse of the Hope Diamond” will take us back to the origins of the mystery. A watch party in the Community Room starts at noon Monday, Oct. 27. Lecturer Carolyn Crouch will explore the origins of the curse and its connection to the extravagant and reckless lifestyle of its own Evalyn Walsh McLean.

Young adult programming

On Oct. 10 from 3-5 p.m. anyone between 13 and 18 can stop by the Young Adult room on the lower level to play games on the gaming television. Snacks will be provided.

The Young Adult Craft Club meets from 3-5 p.m. Oct. 15. The club will make air dry clay ghosts.

Youth programming

Stop by Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:15 a.m. for baby and preschool story time. The Facebook story time goes live at 10:15 a.m. Tuesdays.

Stop by the library during the Enchanted Pumpkin Festival, Oct. 18 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. for Halloween open house. Children may show off their costumes and trick or treat through the library. A special craft will be available on the second floor.

Storybook Pumpkins are back. On Oct. 13-17 families are invited to decorate a pumpkin as their favorite book character to be displayed throughout the holiday. Families who bring in a pumpkin will be entered in a drawing to win a Halloween family basket. As the pumpkins will be on display in a heated environment, people are asked not to bring in carved pumpkins.

Elementary-age children may stop in Oct. 8-10 between 2 and 6 p.m. or Oct. 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to make glow in the dark eyes. Preschool-age patrons may stop in Oct. 22-24 from 2-6 p.m. or Oct. 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a walking spider craft.  

Mini Art Gallery grab and go kits are available to preschoolers through sixth-grade kids. They may take a home mini canvas or clay kit to create their own art project. Art works will be displayed in the Youth Department Art Gallery throughout library’s art show if they are returned to the desk on the second floor before Oct. 8.  

The grab and go craft of the month may be picked up any time in October. This month’s craft is a mummy action figure.  

Adult Book Club Oct. 20 at 2 and 6 p.m.

The club will discuss The Book of Hope by Jane Goodall. There will be meetings at 2 and 6 p.m. Those attending the evening meeting should use the First Street entrance. Copies of the book are available for checkout at the Information Services desk on the lower level.

Next month the club will read This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger.

Henry County Genealogical Society – Oct. 27 at 1:30 p.m.

This month the meeting will be a tour of the Wiley House at 906 W Division St. in Galva.

Recipe Round-Up – Oct. 14 at noon

Simply find a recipe matching our theme of the month, snack foods. Cook it, and bring it, along with copies of your recipe, in to share at the meeting.

Digital Literacy Class 

Available topics are Essential Computer Skills, Essential Software Skills and Technology Tools in Daily Life. For more specific questions. stop in during the class and we’ll work with you to figure it out. Classes are now by appointment, so call 309-852-4505 and ask for the Information Services desk to schedule yours.

Creativity at the Carnegie

Do you enjoy knitting, crocheting, embroidery, cross stitch or quilting? Sessions are held in the Community Room on the second Tuesday of each month from 4 to 6 p.m. This is an adult group sponsored by the Friends of the Library for those who would like to enjoy the comradery of others while creating their own fiber projects.
