No one was injured in a house fire Monday night in the 600 block of East Third Street.

“All occupants and pets had safely evacuated the residence prior to the department’s arrival,” Fire Chief Stephen Welgat reported in a news release Tuesday.

The fire department was dispatched at 10:22 p.m. Monday to the fire. When they arrived, they saw smoke originating from a second-story bedroom.

“Firefighters made a rapid interior attack and were able to quickly extinguish the flames,” the news release said.

While the fire damage was successfully contained to the single bedroom of origin, the second floor of the residence sustained smoke damage throughout, according to the release.

Eight Kewanee firefighters responded to the scene, including two off-duty personnel called in to assist. “The Kewanee Community Fire Protection District also provided vital assistance during the operation,” the news release said.

Crews remained on the scene for an hour and 20 minutes to ensure all hot spots were extinguished.

No injuries were reported for residents or emergency personnel.

The cause of the fire had not been determined Tuesday and was under investigation, the news release said.
