Linda Getter recently took on the role of president of the Galva Arts Council board. Getter, of rural Victoria, has been a member of the board since late spring and is excited about her new role.

An experienced crafter and floral designer, she also creates beautiful jewelry. She joins Vice President Abby Jaquet and Treasurer Tami Siemers as the Council’s executive team. Rounding out the 10-member board are Tim Murphy, Deb Booth, Frankie Cortes, Margaret Cortes, and student reps Allison Nordstrom and Randal Engels.

“The board could use at least two more members, and volunteers are always needed,” Getter said.

Board members are considering several events for the new year, among them jewelry and knitting classes, rock painting, and outside programs at Wiley Park. An initial survey of Galva students provided some information, and the group hopes to get more input from adults with an additional questionnaire.

“We are hoping to have more suggestions from the community for our January planning meeting,” said Getter. “Art workshops and coffee houses were very popular in the past and we hope to have more of them in 2025.”

A “Busted Canvas” workshop is being offered on Saturday, Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. to noon at the GAC’s Exchange Street location. Basic materials will be provided, but participants can bring old Christmas cards or pictures as well.

The cost is $5 per person, and registration is required by Saturday, Nov. 9.

“Because of the need to procure and prepare supplies, we can’t accept walk-ins,” said Getter, who will be teaching the class.

Registration can be made online using the link: https://tinyurl.com/gacbustedcanvas.

Payment can be made through PayPal @galvaartscouncil or by sending a check to the Galva Arts Council at P.O. Box 29, Galva, IL. 61434.

The Arts Council’s Annual Mini Tree and Wreath Festival, held this year on Nov. 30, has been a popular addition to Galva’s Old-Fashioned Christmas for over 25 years. The decorated creations can be seen that day from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase. Getter invites everyone to take a chance on winning one of the beautiful entries.

“It’s part of a very busy day at the Arts Council building,” she said.
Earlier in the day, children can participate in a free Make & Take, where they decorate three fun holiday crafts. While there is no cost for the workshop, donations are always appreciated.

From 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., soup, drinks, and a dessert will be available for a donation of $5 per person.

That evening, a holiday coffee house will begin at 7 p.m. with special music by Greg Percival, followed by an open mic for other performers.

“The entire board invites the community to take advantage of all that’s offered by the Arts Council,” said Getter. “Our workshops and annual holiday programs always end the year on a high note for everyone who participates.”
