Mayor reports strong third-quarter retail sales

By Michael Berry    December 10, 2025

Kewanee’s retail businesses continue to thrive, Mayor Gary Moore said at Monday’s City Council meeting.

Moore said that according to Kewanee Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Mark Mikenas, third-quarter retail sales in Kewanee were up 5.6 percent over the third quarter of 2024.

The mayor said that Mikenas had accounted for inflation in coming up with that figure.

He said the city’s retailers are “well on the way” to setting a new record for annual sales in 2025.

Also Monday:

— Council members praised city workers for their efforts in clearing snow from Kewanee’s streets after last month’s snowstorm.

They said they had received positive comments for residents about the snow-removal effort.

— Miller Janzen was sworn in as the newest member of the Kewanee Fire Department.

Fire Chief Stephen Welgat said Janzen is in his second week of employment and is doing well.

“He had already obtained his Emergency Medical Technician license prior to becoming a firefighter, so he has been an asset to the department from day one,” Welgat said.

Janzen will attend the Peoria Fire Academy in February.

He, girlfriend Emma and their 24-month-old daughter Sawyer, live in Geneseo.
